Die Einzelausstellung SIMULACRUM des norwegischen Künstlers Nils Olav Bøe zeigt die sechsteilige Fotoserie SIMULACRUM und das Video SUNRISE II.
Für seine ungewöhnlichen Foto- und Filmarbeiten entwirft Nils Olav Bøe künstliche Modellwelten, die der realen Welt zwar ähneln, aber weit über das hinaus gehen, was ein schlichtes Abbild der Realität im Stande wäre, über die Beschaffenheit der Welt zu erzählen. Simulacrum bedeutet bei Nils Olav Bøe im strukturalistischen Sinne die Rekonstruktion eines Gegenstandes durch Selektion und Neukombination. Gleich einem Wissenschaftler dringt der Künstler in Mikrostrukturen der Wirklichkeit vor. Mit dem Objektiv seiner Kamera vergrößert er winzige Menschenfiguren, die aus dem Modellbaukasten stammen, so stark, dass sie dem Betrachter in menschlicher Grösse präsentiert werden und arrangiert sie in alltäglichen Situationen des urbanen öffentlichen Lebens. Nie sind diese Situationen eindeutig, kann das Umfeld der Personen, oder ein möglicher Handlungsablauf ermittelt werden. Sie scheinen das Unbewusste, das Irrationale und Verschwiegene, die dunklen Kehrseiten des Lebens, Sexualität oder unterdrückte Gewalt zu offenbaren. Gleichzeitig wird durch die Vergrößerung das Unvollkommene, werden die Unebenheiten und verrutschten Bemalungen dieser winzigen Figuren sichtbar. Einerseits erweisen sie sich als schlampige Reproduktionen ihrer menschlichen Vorbilder, andererseits verwandelt Bøe durch seine Fotografien ihre flüchtige Bemalung in etwas Expressives. Die Unterscheidung zwischen falscher und richtiger Kopie, Urbild und Abbild, Realität und Imagination wird verwischt.

Die Ausstellung wird, wie alle Ausstellungen von FIELD, von einem interdisziplinären Programm begleitet, das die Themen der künstlerischen Arbeit aufgreift und vertieft.

Im FIELDFILMSCREENING wird der Film Lost Highway von David Lynch gezeigt werden. Die Szenen von Lynchs Filmen weisen in ihrer Ästhetik und bedrohlichen Atmosphäre viele Parallelen zu den Arbeiten von Nils Olav Bøe auf. Manchmal muten die Fotografien wie komprimierte Standbilder aus Filmen dieser Art an.

In der FIELDLESUNG wird dieses Mal Texte des Dichters und Autors Eberhard Häfner beinhalten. Häfner befreit die Sprache von bestimmten gebräuchlichen Maßstäben und formalem Regelwerk. Es transformiert die Sprache in neue assoziative Ebenen, die dann ganz neue Sinnzusammenhänge eröffnen.

Des weiteren wird es im FIELDDISKURSLABORATORIUM diesmal ein Zwiegespräch zwischen der Philosophin und Journalistin Dr. Mirjam Schaub (geb. 1970) und dem Medienwissenschaftler, Kurator und Künstler Prof. Winfried Gerling (geb. 1963) über den Begriff des Simulacrum geben. Dr. Schaub lehrt an der Freien Universität Berlin. Ihre Arbeitsschwerpunkte sind Ästhetik und Kunstphilosophie, Philosophie der audio-visuellen Medien, insbesondere Film- und Kinotheorie, sowie Metaphysikkritik und französische Philosophie des 20. Jahrhunderts. Prof. Gerling lehrt an der Universität Potsdam und der Fachhochschule Potsdam Konzeption und Ästhetik der Neuen Medien im Studiengang Europäische Medienwissenschaft.

FIELD verspricht sich von diesem Programm einen inspirierenden Gedankenaustausch sowie spannende Synergien. Im Kontext der Ausstellung können die künstlerischen Arbeiten und Begrifflichkeiten noch einmal unter einem neuen und fokussierten Blickwinkel betrachtet werden.

The solo exhibition SIMULACRUM by Norwegian artist Nils Olav Bøe shows the photo series SIMULACRUM and the video SUNRISE II.
For his extraordinary photography and video artworks Nils Olav Bøe constructs artificial urban landscapes that, though they resemble the real world, surpass by far what a simple copy of reality could tell us about the character of the actual world. In the work of Nils Olav Bøe, Simulacrum is used in the structural sense, meaning the reconstruction of an object by selection and recombination. Like a scientist, the artist penetrates into the microstructures of reality. Nils Olav Bøe uses his camera objective to enlarge tiny model figures in a way that - to the viewer - they appear to have the size of human beings, arranged in every-day situations of public urban life. These situations are always ambiguous, never can we discern the surrounding, or determine the action in which the figure is involved. The scenes seem to convey the unconscious, the irrational and secret, the hidden dark sides of life, sexuality, or suppressed violence. At the same time, the enlargement of the model figures makes their imperfection, unevenness, and imprecise coloring visible. On the one hand they betray the fact that they are negligent copies of their human model, on the other hand Nils Olav Bøe makes use of the rough coloring as an expressive device in his photography. The differentiation between wrong and right copy, original and fake, reality and imagination becomes blurred.

As always, the exhibition at FIELD will be expanded by an interdisciplinary programme that takes up discusses in depth the themes of the artistic work.

At the FIELD FILM SCREENING the film Lost Highway by David Lynch will be shown. The scenes in Lynch’s films show many parallels to the works by Nils Olav Bøe concerning their aesthetics and threatening atmosphere. At times, the photographs appear to be stills from a film of this kind.

The FIELD LECTURE in this round will present texts by the poet and author Eberhard Häfner. Häfner frees his language from traditional terms of usage and formal rules. He transforms language to reach new associative regions that enable the creation of entirely new contexts.

Finally, at the FIELD DISCOURSE LAB a dialogue concerned with the term Simulacrum will take place between the philosopher and journalist Dr. Mirjam Schaub (born 1970) and the media theorist, curator and artist Prof. Winfried Gerling (born 1963). Dr. Schaub teaches at the Freie Universität in Berlin. Her focus is on aesthetics and philosophy of art, philosophy of audio-visual media, especially film and cinema theory, as well as the criticism of metaphysics, and French philosophy of the 20th century. Prof. Gerling teaches the conception and aesthetics of new media as a part of the recently established European media studies at the University of Potsdam.

FIELD expects an inspiring exchange of thought and exciting synergies in the course of this program. In the context of the exhibition the artworks and concepts can be viewed again from a new and more focused perspective.
